Summary:
Barley is a cereal used as a staple food in many countries. It is commonly used as an ingredient in baked products and soup in Europe and the United States. Barley malt is used to make beer, and as a natural sweetener called malt sugar or barley jelly sugar.

Uses
These uses have been tested in humans or animals. Safety and effectiveness have not always been proven. Some of these conditions are potentially serious, and should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare provider.

Safety:
Avoid if allergic or hypersensitive to barley flour or beer. Barley appears to be well tolerated in non-allergic, healthy adults in recommended doses for short periods of time, as a cereal or in the form of beer. Use cautiously with diabetes, asthma or arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). Contamination of barley with fungus has occurred. Traditionally, women have been advised against eating large amounts of barley sprouts during pregnancy. Infants fed with a formula containing barley water, whole milk, and corn syrup have developed malnutrition and anemia, possibly due to vitamin deficiencies.

Possible side effects:
Asthma, eye, nose or sinus irritation, feeling of fullness, increased alertness, increased heart rate, low blood sugar levels, low levels of iron in the blood (in infants), malnutrition (in infants), swollen skin, eyelids, arms or legs.

Possible interactions:
Drugs that are taken by mouth, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and herbs or supplements with similar effects.

Dosing:

Adults (18 years and older):
High cholesterol: 1.5mL of barley oil twice has been taken daily or 30g of barley bran flour has been taken daily by mouth.
Constipation: 9g of germinated barley foodstuff (GBF) has been taken daily for up to 20 days.
Ulcerative colitis (mild-to-moderate): 10g of germinated barley foodstuff (GBF) has been taken three times daily.
